Context
Located next to the skate park and baseball fields of the Acropolis Sports Complex, this new public dog park in northern Puerto Rico was designed with its natural and infrastructural context in mind. The site lies within the island’s northern karst region—an ecological landscape shaped by limestone mogotes and rugged topography. That unique terrain inspired the design: a series of soft berms mimic mogotes to define space, offer elevation for shade and play, and anchor the park visually to its region.
“Landscape berms were inspired by the mogotes of Puerto Rico’s northern karst region.”
A landscape shaped by ecology, constraints, and comfort
NECA Design Studio collaborated with Tapia Fernández Arquitectos to create a landscape concept rooted in ecological patterns while responding to real site constraints. A key challenge was working around an active LUMA utility easement, which had to remain accessible and free of permanent structures. Instead of avoiding it, the easement was embraced as part of the design—a vegetated, multifunctional zone that doubles as open play space. The planting palette combines native species and resilient ornamentals that thrive in full sun, tolerate high foot and paw traffic, and are safe for dogs.
“Native and ornamental plants were selected for their resilience, shade value, and pet safety.”
Clear zoning, comfort, and shade
The park is divided into three main areas: one for large dogs, one for small dogs, and the LUMA easement as shared green space. Both dog areas feature a splash pad and shaded gazebos for cooling off and gathering. Trees, grasses, and groundcovers frame the layout, buffer edges, and create natural enclosures. Walkways, fences, and seating zones were designed to maximize visibility, safety, and ease of movement while blending with the site’s native rhythm.
