Context
Condado, Santurce, San Juan – In the heart of a dense urban neighborhood, this project transformed an L - shaped residential lot into a resilient green refuge. Surrounded by single - and multi - family housing and a private school, the site faced typical urban challenges: limited privacy, excess paved surfaces, low permeability, and frequent stormwater runoff.
The landscape design turned these constraints into opportunities, shaping a private and shaded outdoor environment closely connected to nature.
To manage rainfall sustainably, the site features a rain garden that captures and filters water on - site, reducing runoff and easing pressure on municipal infrastructure.
The landscape is also productive: a raised garden and fruit trees provide fresh food and promote self - sufficiency. Alongside composting areas, these elements deepen residents’ emotional connection to the space through gardening, harvesting, and daily interaction.
The design emphasizes both comfort and sustainability.
A lightweight pergola built from salvaged steel profiles supports climbing plants that offer shade and visual privacy. Seating areas ben eath it create a welcoming outdoor atmosphere. From plant selection to the reuse of materials, every decision contributes to a coherent system where built form and nature are interwoven. Works by Puerto Rican artists were integrated into the garden to enri ch the sensory experience — blending ecological function with cultural expression
